VVER reactor fuel

VVER-440 fuel assemblies (FA) have been manufactured since 1963. Presently supplies are made to meet the demands of NPP in Russia, Ukraine, Armenia, Eastern European countries and Finland.

A VVER-440 FA is composed of 126 fuel rods with zirconium alloy claddings, which are filled with fuel pellets of uranium dioxide.

To improve reactor physical properties and safety some fuel rods are filled with pellets containing gadolinium oxide.

Fuel assembly fabrication
Fuel assemblies (FA) are manufactured by JSC Mashinostroitelny Zavod and JSC Novosibirsk Chemical Concentrates Plant.

JSC Mashinostroitelny Zavod has been manufacturing VVER-440 FA (serial production) since 1971. JSC NCCP commenced the production of this type of FAs in 1997. Presently, these enterprises are the alternative suppliers of nuclear fuel to the reactors of such type. FAs are supplied to the countries of Eastern Europe, CIS countries and Finland.

In the 1970’s JSC Mashinostroitelny Zavod started serial production of fuel for Beloyarsk NPP with BN-600 reactor.

JSC Mashinostroitelny Zavod manufactures FAs for RBMK reactors. In 1973 the enterprise commenced serial production of FAs for RBMK-1000 and in 1982 – for RBMK-1500. Presently these reactors are run with the fuel with burnable poison which improves nuclear safety thereof and ensures better economic indexes.

In 1978 JSC Mashinostroitelny Zavod started serial production of fuel rods and FAs for commercial VVER-1000 reactors. Now this fuel is successfully used at NPPs in Russia, Ukraine and Bulgaria. The fuel manufactured by TVEL Fuel Company enterprises will be used at NPPs under construction in China, Iran and India.

To meet NPPs demands for the fuel with improved stability to changes in geometry JSC MSZ and JSC NCCP have developed and facilitated serial production of such fuel. The fuel design provides the possibilities for its upgrading.

In 2003 JSC NCCP commenced TVSA and TVSA-2 fuel assembly fabrication. Thus, the two enterprises became alternative manufacturers of VVER-100 fuel.

In addition to the fuel fabrication for commercial nuclear power plants, the TVEL Fuel Company also supplies fuel to research reactors in Russia and some foreign countries (Hungary, Kazakhstan, Poland, Czech Republic, Ukraine). JSC TVEL supplies fuel to all existing icebreakers Arktika, Rossia, Taimyr, Sovetsky Soyuz, Vaigach, Yamal, lighter ship Sevmorput (unique Russian ice-breaker and transportation nuclear-propelled ship) and other commercial vessels of the Russian Marine Fleet.

Global nuclear power

Nuclear power is to meets growing energy demands of mankind while reserves of non-recoverable resources are limited. Nuclear fuel, as compared to other energy vectors, gives the possibility to generate millions of times more energy. Moreover, the resources here are not exhaustible. Additionally, nuclear power contribution to the growth of “greenhouse effect” is negligible.

Nuclear power share amounts to approximately 16% of total electricity generation in Russia. Nuclear share of the entire energy mix for the European part of the country is 30% and for the Northwest – approximately 40%.

The Russian nuclear industry consists of about 200 enterprises with more than 300,000 employees. Four large scientific and production complexes form the structure of the industry and include enterprises of nuclear fuel cycle and nuclear weapons, nuclear power scientific and research institutes and enterprises.
