Information about TVEL Corporation

Quality of production
Tubes

The plant’s pipe-rolling workshop manufactures complete spectrum of tubes required for nuclear fuel production. The applied technology and equipment enable the Works to manufacture high-precision tubes of geometrical size ± 0,03 mm, and with such surface quality that defect level not exceeds 0,015 mm at depth and with the minimal range of parameters according to microstructure and mechanical properties.

According to the legislation of the Russian Federation, JSC TVEL has all necessary licenses for management of nuclear material, including transportation. All activities related to uses of atomic energy are carried out under the license granted by the Federal Environmental, Industrial and Nuclear Supervision Service (former Gosatomnadzor of Russia, now Rostechnadzor). The product sales are carried out in accordance with the license for export and import of nuclear material, equipment and special technologies granted by the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of Russia.

The Fuel Company’s enterprises, which effect direct supplies, fabrication and sales of feed material, component parts, pellets and nuclear fuel to consumers, also have licenses issued by Rostechnadzor for management of nuclear material, radioactive substances and waste.

To transport nuclear material, the enterprises have certified transportation containers (packages), road and railroad conveyances, including special railcars with special fixing features allowing transportation of nuclear material.

All operations associated with storage, loading, unloading and transportation of materials are carried out by relevant unit of enterprises which deliver products.

Conveyances for transportation of nuclear material have sanitary and epidemiological certificates. Adequate radiation monitoring is arranged for during transportation. Personnel who are involved in nuclear fuel deliveries are regularly trained and have appropriate work permits.

Nuclear fuel cycle

Nuclear fuel cycle is a combination of techniques for mining uranium, nuclear reactor fuel production and preparing the fuel for the use and after-use disposal. The notion “fuel cycle” specifies the fact that spent or irradiated nuclear fuel (SNF) can be regenerated after special treatment. The nuclear fuel cycle, including ultimate disposal of high-level waste, takes generally 50 to 100 years.

Nuclear power fuel cycle can be divided into three phases. The initial phase covers uranium ore mining through supply of fabricated fuel assemblies to NPP sites. The next phase includes reactor operation to generate electricity and temporary store SNF at NPP site. The final phase includes several operations: irradiated fuel transportation to a special storage facility or SNF reprocessing plant and burial of vitrified high-level waste after reprocessing.
