RBMK reactor fuel

The RBMK-1000 and RBMK-1500 fuel assemblies with burnable poison are made of zirconium alloys. Their life is up to 8 years to ensure nuclear safety and good economics. RBMK-1000 fuel assemblies widely use the recovered nuclear fuel.

TVEL Fuel Company
Organizationally, TVEL Fuel Company consists of its major company JSC TVEL, which takes the lead within the Fuel Company and governs affiliated companies – enterprises of nuclear fuel cycle of Russia. The Fuel Company includes large Russian enterprises rendering services in fabrication, supply and scientific and engineering support of nuclear fuel operation at NPPs of Russia, CIS and foreign countries. Among them there are the manufacturers who have more than half a century production background such as Mashinostroitelny Zavod in Elektrostal, Novosibirsk Chemical Concentrate Plant, Chepetsk Mechanical Plant in Udmurtia and Russia’s largest uranium miner – Priargunsky Mining and Chemical Production Association and many others. JSC TVEL has Representative Offices in Ukraine and Slovakia. The Fuel Company’s employees total over 16,800 persons.

Enterprises of the TVEL Fuel Company were the first in the industry certified for the compliance with quality international standard ISO 9001:2000. Some of them were awarded with Certificate of Conformance with the Environmental Management System ISO 14001:1996. JSC TVEL is the first company of Russian nuclear industry, which prepares the consolidated financial statement in accordance with requirements of the international financial accounting standards (IFAS), with the audit being carried out by Deloitte&Touche auditors.

The growth of financial and economic indexes and output of competitive products that are equal to the best foreign items are the evidence of sustainable success of JSC TVEL and its affiliated companies.

Basic activities of the TVEL Fuel Company are focused on the development, fabrication and sales (including export sales) of nuclear fuel as well as nuclear and non-nuclear products. The TVEL-labeled fuel meets high international standards and in some parameters exceeds quality of foreign products.

JSC TVEL fully meets nuclear fuel demands of Russian nuclear power. All Russian NPPs, research reactors, as well as Navy’s propulsion installations, are run with TVEL-labeled fuel. Keeping the leading position at traditional foreign markets (Ukraine, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Hungary, Slovakia, Lithuania, Finland and Armenia which operate the Russian (Soviet) design NPPs) the Corporation is continuously expanding sales markets, in particular, through export growth in Europe and Asia. TVEL-labeled nuclear fuel operates NPPs in Germany, the Netherlands, and Switzerland. JSC TVEL fabricates nuclear fuel for NPPs of China, India and Iran. In total, JSC TVEL supplies nuclear fuel to 13 countries.

In addition to the key products TVEL supplies a broad range of non-nuclear products, including zirconium, lithium and calcium etc. to the Russian and world market.

The quality management system has been implemented at company's main production enterprises which were certified for compliance with the International Standard ISO9001:2000..In

The Certificate of Conformance with this Standard was awarded to JSC TVEL in early 2005.

Three main production enterprises of JSC TVEL - JSC Mashinostroitelny Zavod (Elektrostal), JSC Chepetsk Mechanical Plant (Glazov) and Novosibirsk Chemical Concentrates Plant (Novosibirsk) – were successfully audited and awarded the ISO 14001:1996 Certificate of Conformance with the Environmental Management System.

The 2006 rating of Expert Magazine shows JSC TVEL as holding the 61-st position of Top 400 Largest Companies of Russia.

JSC TVEL is a part of JSC Atomenergoprom, a vertical integrated company, which will unite enterprises of civil sector of Russian nuclear industry and provide full production cycle of nuclear power engineering, from uranium production to nuclear power plant construction and energy generation.

Glossary

BWR reactor– boiling water reactor using water as a coolant.

NPP – Nuclear Power Plant, an electricity generating plant with one or more power units (reactors), turboalternators and other equipment.

SNF – spent nuclear fuel, irradiated nuclear fuel. After unloading from a reactor it is temporary stored in a pool at the NPP site, and then sent either for reprocessing or for disposal.
