Zirconium
Zirconium is fabricated at Chepetsk Mechanical Plant which is the only in Russia and one of the three largest plants in the world specializing in such production.
Chepetsk Mechanical Plant produces a broad range of zirconium and its alloy items, which are used in nuclear power; diode and aerospace machinery;
car, gas and oil refining industry; and shipbuilding.

As of January 1, 2007 JSC TVEL’s stock capital amounts to RUR 6,098,021 (six million ninety eight thousand and twenty one) and is divided into 6,098,021 (six million ninety eight thousand and twenty one) common shares with nominal cost of RUR 1 (one) each. The Russian Federation owns all shares of JSC TVEL as a federal property; pursuant to the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation ¹ 1009 as of August 04, 2004 «On Approval of the List of Strategic Enterprises and Joint Stock Companies» JSC TVEL is not subject to privatization unless special decision is made by the President of the Russian Federation. Nuclear fuel means fuel assemblies (FAs). FA is a complex construction, the main element of which being a bundle of fuel rods made from stainless steel or zirconium. A bundle of fuel rods is filled with uranium dioxide pellets, enriched to 5 % U235. Rods, sealed tightly and loaded with fuel pellets, are called "fuel rods". In order to reduce the gaps between fuel rods and to acquire the necessary structural rigidity, fuel assembly has a number of structural elements: tailpiece, cap and a set of spacing grids. In some cases, they are equipped with a shroud tube. Depending on the reactor types FAs have different number of rods.
Nuclear fuel is delivered by air, sea, railway and motor special transport. Previously, it is placed in high-strength metallic containers, specially certified for transportation of nuclear materials. A special route and transportation schedule are worked out; an additional control of safe transportation on the way is provided. Fuel transportation has never experienced a single accident resulted in enhancement of radiation background.
