RBMK reactor fuel
The RBMK-1000 and RBMK-1500 fuel assemblies with burnable poison are made of zirconium alloys. Their life is up to 8 years to ensure nuclear safety and good economics. RBMK-1000 fuel assemblies widely use the recovered nuclear fuel.

| Nuclear fuel for EGP-6 reactors |
|
Since 1972 Mashinostroitelny Zavod has been supplying fuel assemblies to reactors of Bilibino NPP (nuclear heat and power plant). Four single-type power units of Bilibino NPP operate in the Chukotka Autonomous District in permafrost area. The life of Bilibino town is completely dependent on the reliability of NPP operation. There are very strict requirements for the EGP-6 nuclear fuel quality because of that.
With respect to design, FAs for EGP-6 reactors represent tubular fuel rods with steel-made claddings, which are placed in graphite cartridge. A 30-year experience of FAs’ operation has demonstrated a high level of their reliability.

Interesting facts about nuclear energy
Radioactive phenomenon was discovered by Antuan Becquerel in 1898. At first it was thought that the discovered radiation is emitted by an atom. But only later it became known that their source is a nucleus.
The first nuclear reactor was built in the USA in 1942 under the direction of Enrico Fermi. In the USSR the first reactor was commissioned 4 years later. The project was headed by Igor Kurchatov.
In 2000, nuclear power industry was the first to achieve the “pre-perestroika” level of production, as compared with other industries. Since 1998 Russia’s NPPs have provided annual growth of electricity generation in an average by 7 Bln kWh.
