VVER reactor fuel
VVER-440 fuel assemblies (FA) have been manufactured since 1963. Presently supplies are made to meet the demands of NPP in Russia, Ukraine, Armenia, Eastern European countries and Finland.
A VVER-440 FA is composed of 126 fuel rods with zirconium alloy claddings, which are filled with fuel pellets of uranium dioxide.
To improve reactor physical properties and safety some fuel rods are filled with pellets containing gadolinium oxide.

Research reactor fuel assemblies are designed to generate neutrons to conduct scientific and research experiments in the field of nuclear physics, radiation biology and industrial-scale manufacture of radioisotope products.
The fuel assembly being manufactured at Novosibirsk Chemical Concentrates Plant is designed as a seamless fuel rod which intermediate layer is made of uranium fuel composition canned into aluminum alloy cladding. Fuel rods feature different profiles of cross-section to facilitate fabrication of FAs with any pre-set performance characteristics.
TVEL Fuel Company supplies nuclear fuel for research reactors in Russia, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Poland, Ukraine, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Vietnam and Libya.

Global nuclear power
Nuclear power is to meets growing energy demands of mankind while reserves of non-recoverable resources are limited. Nuclear fuel, as compared to other energy vectors, gives the possibility to generate millions of times more energy. Moreover, the resources here are not exhaustible. Additionally, nuclear power contribution to the growth of “greenhouse effect” is negligible.
Nuclear power share amounts to approximately 16% of total electricity generation in Russia. Nuclear share of the entire energy mix for the European part of the country is 30% and for the Northwest – approximately 40%.
The Russian nuclear industry consists of about 200 enterprises with more than 300,000 employees. Four large scientific and production complexes form the structure of the industry and include enterprises of nuclear fuel cycle and nuclear weapons, nuclear power scientific and research institutes and enterprises.
