IN DEVELOPMENT OF NEW TYPES OF NUCLEAR FUEL, AS WELL AS IN PRODUCTION ACTIVITIES, THE COMPANY IS FOCUSED ON THE PROJECTS THAT ALLOW REUSE OF NATURAL RESOURCES

The Company core business is production of nuclear fuel for nuclear power plants, it is performed with re-use of resources and materials to the maximum extent. Inter alia, the company produces nuclear fuel from the regenerated uranium (in cooperation with Framatome since 1994 in compliance with requirements of European regulators of fabricated products).

In addition, spent nuclear fuel (SNF) is used for fabrication of MOX-fuel, mixed oxide uranium-plutonium fuel, intended for operation in fast reactors pursuant to unique technology that open an opportunity for multiple nuclear fuel recycling, complete prevention of serious abnormalities at NPPs, reduction of nuclear waste volumes.

The nuclear fuel produced by Fuel company TVEL is operated in 14 countries over the world. In most cases, the costs of electricity produced by NPPs on the basis of TVEL fuel are lower as compared to other types of generation. An important advantage is unavailability of aerosols and emissions of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.According to International Energy Agency (IEA), today, the operating NPPs allow to reduce the emission of 2.1 bln. tonnes of greenhouse gases annually worldwide. This is a serious contribution to the fight against climate change.

Application of nuclear fuel in transport reactors (ships of nuclear icebreakers fleet) allows to minimize the negative impact on the environment
in the Northern Sea Route in transportation of cargoes and conduct of research expeditions. Production and supply of nuclear fuel to developing countries, including development of cooperation with embarking countries, contributes to development of the scientific and technological level of these countries. To date, the contracts for supply of nuclear fuel for nuclear power plants under construction have been signed with Egypt and Bangladesh, Armenia and China.

The fuel assemblies for research reactors fabricated by TVEL are applied in many research centers around the world and ensure the implementation of research activities in the fields of fundamental studies, material science studies, medicine, nuclear energy, etc., these activities, inter alia, contributes to economic, scientific and technological development and improvement of technical education in the these countries.

In addition, fuel for research reactors will be supplied to nuclear installations constructed in the framework of Rosatom projects on establishment of centres of nuclear science and technology (CNST) in embarking countries, which will contribute to development of science, medicine, agriculture and education in such countries.
